Families Learn Healthy Lifestyle Habits

The Packard Pediatric Weight Control Program (PPWCP) is a family-based, group behavioral and educational program. It promotes lifelong healthy eating and exercise habits for overweight children, adolescents and their families. It is part of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital’s Center for Healthy Weight.

Since 1999, more than 80% of participating children and adolescents have achieved age-appropriate weight reduction.

The PPWCP offers age-specific programs for:
  • Children ages 8-12 (groups offered in both English and Spanish)
  • Adolescents ages 13-15 (groups offered in English)

Our Six Month Program

During the weight management program, groups of 12 families meet together every week for six months. Families are encouraged to attend each of the 25 sessions. Throughout the program, participants and their families learn to:
  • Identify and avoid high-calorie, low-nutrient foods
  • Develop better exercise habits
  • Reduce sedentary behaviors (activities that require little or no physical activity)
  • Follow a healthy, balanced diet, even in difficult situations like family gatherings, holidays and parties
  • Maintain a healthy weight over the long-term
